HOW THIS WHOLE THING HAPPENED (grab the tissues because it's pretty pathetic)…

Why I Was “Forced,” Yup, Pretty Literally Actually, to Develop a Fool-Proof SYSTEM for Delivering Clear Advice, Direction and Strategy, and Becoming My OWN Coach and Cheerleader…

My first million dollars in sales was actually a string of lucky events (well, lucky until they got super unlucky.)

Here's what happened…

In 1991, I graduated from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University and got engaged to the executive chef of a very fancy restaurant in Washington, D.C. I was 21, and well, he was nearly 20 years older, and I thought this was a freaking brilliant idea.

What happens when you marry a chef? You get kind of fat, but for our purposes here, you get into the restaurant business. Natch.

He would create the gastronomical magic and I would run the “back of the house” and deal with the marketing and finances.

Within the first year, we were doing more than $1 million dollars in sales. Not bad for a 22 year old, huh?

It was totally insane to me that I could graduate from college, literally open the doors to this brand new business that I basically knew nothing about, and "Voila!" instant millionaire. (Millionairess? Whatever. I was raking it in. Or so I thought.)

That school's so beautiful, let's take another look here, why don't we?

OK, back to the saga story.

Who knew? Little nugget like me? Must be a little genius I am, right?

Not so fast supa sta.

To say that my head got a teeny, tiny bit swollen, was a GROSS understatement. GROSS. As in more ways than one. My ego was the size of Texarkana. Drank me a little too much of my own Kool-Aid. Yup.

Unfortunately, I had a little problem actually taking what I LEARNED at Georgetown and APPLYING it to my real life business. Studying for a test was one thing, actually knowing how to use the data, little somethin' different.

Fast forward another 5 years or so and I've got a one year old, a marriage on the rocks and I've got a catering company and a venue we're running too. As many of you might know, financial pressure isn't so yummy in the romance department and yours truly wasn't so hot at multi-tasking on her best day.

In other words, I blew it. Big time.

I was totally focused on hitting my SALES numbers and not focused on my PROFIT numbers. So I tried everything I could to bail myself out: classes, mentors, retired executives, family friends, expensive consultants, multiple accountants, and I just couldn't pull it off.

No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't “get it.” The more knowledge I tried to acquire, the more my brain felt like it was going to explode. I just didn't know if I should turn left, right, focus here, cut there…who's advice should I take?

Who was actually telling me the right stuff to do?

I had no clue.

You can see how this probably ended up. After a nasty skiing accident that left me virtually unable to walk without lots of rehab (a little tricky when you're supposed to play hostess all day and you can't even stand for more than 20 minutes), my husband and I went our separate ways and I partnered up with another restaurant group to take over our space.

Things sort of continued to implode before they got better. In 2000, I reinvented myself and launched another million dollar concept called The Party Goddess! - a celebrity based catering and event planning company based in Los Angeles, but it wasn't without a lot of the same trials and tribulations I had in the restaurant business.

Why?

Because I hadn't learned my lessons. Has that ever happened to you?

You don't clean up your first mess and change your behavior and then, SMACK! you've got the same problems all over again. Well, I'll take one for the team here and raise my hand. I DEFINITELY hadn't solved my own problems. I was still totally focused on the wrong things and they made me dizzy. I couldn't focus and worse, I didn't even know what to focus ON or who to listen to. Who actually knew what they were talking about and could really help me out?

I knew what I needed. I was desperate for someone to be my cheerleader. Someone to be my coach and give me direction. Someone to say I was going to be just fine when the exact last thing I felt was “just fine.”

In fact, I felt stupid. I felt stupid, alone, dumb and freaked up in the head, if you want to know the real truth. (Hey, and I'm just getting going here…But wait! There's more! Just kidding, let's get back to what we're talking about.)

I just kept beating myself up and repeating the same horrible things to myself over and over again. Really bad stuff, like “What is wrong with you?” and “How can you not KNOW this stuff by now? You went to one of the top business schools in the world for God sakes.” But it just wouldn't stop. That nasty, mean tape just kept going. And once it got going, boy, did it get going.

So I had to solve my own problem.

And finally I did.

I pretended like I was right back at Georgetown, researching and studying with everything I had in me. I took every OUNCE of oomph and the last shreds of confidence (if you can call it that, the fleeting times it showed it, it was fueled by martinis, but let's pretend I didn't have to go there) I had and committed myself 100% to turning it around. Let's face it, I was pretty much washed up anyway, why not give it just…

And so I did.

And it worked.

7 millimeters from the edge of the cliff and I pulled it off.

I came up with my own ways to identify my problems:

But I had even more things stacked against me:

I was a single Mom juggling a toddler AND a business I wasn't sure I was totally equipped to manage

AND I knew I had a VERY short attention span.

AND I had a VERY meager bank account (ok, truth in advertising, it was actually overdrawn, but let's move away from that for a second) so I didn't have a lot of money to spend on a coach,

Plus I didn't know who to trust.

But I knew there had to be hope for an ADHD single mother, entrepreneur, passionate soul like me who just wanted to build her company and share her gifts.

And there was.

Remember all of that research and studying and blood, sweat and tears I mentioned above when I wanted to reinvent myself? Well, I also stumbled upon some really key people. People who cheered me on, told me I could do it and that no matter what, they still believed in me.

These people and a ton more were there for me. They supported me and picked me up and saw me to the finish line.

Got me to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

And what a light it turned out to be.

Because then

I couldn't believe it… what could they POSSIBLY want from me?

Well, I guess everyone loves a good story.

And they got one.

And as you might have guessed, things really, really started to turn around.

And I knew at that moment, that I had to “Pay It Forward.” I had to help all of those other struggling entrepreneurs out there who were just like me. Overwhelmed, stressed out, strung out and just totally unsure of where to go or to whom to turn.

So I did.

And here's the system I used to fix my own problems and you can too:

  1. I finally owned up to the fact that I had a problem. No coincidence that I was running into the same issues over and over by accident. The common denominator was me.
  2. I committed to doing something about it. Once. And. For. All.
    • Period. Next.
    • Done. Over.
    • Goodbye Stupid Story.
    • Hasta la Vista, BABY.
    • You suck.
    • OK, you get it.
  3. I researched my options.
  4. Then, created a plan that suited me because I knew it needed to be:
    • delivered frequently
    • in bite sized chunks that WOULD NOT overwhelm me
    • be immediately actionable (this ship needed to turn around fast)
    • was something that made me feel BETTER about myself and my business and not WORSE (the beating myself up stuff had to stop)

And once I created the plan for myself, I used it in my own businesses (soon I was back in the saddle and running more than one million dollar company), worked it, tweaked it, retooled it, redid it, cut out what didn't work, measured my results, cut out more stuff, added in things that would make me more money in less time and then inserted tips and tricks that applied to this super fast paced tech world we're all in (social media, stuff to manage my overflowing email inbox and all of those other bright shiny objects.)
